💢 The US is not expected to initiate new strikes against Iran “for the time being” and is instead shifting its focus toward economic pressure, Secretary of State Marco Rubio told several allied foreign ministers in recent days, Axios reports, citing a US official and another source familiar with the discussions.
The current strategy calls for increasing pressure on Tehran through the US naval blockade and a new Treasury sanctions campaign, while moving as much oil as possible through the Strait of Hormuz and into global markets. US officials argue that mine-clearing operations and the growing number of tankers using the strait’s southern lane have sharply reduced Iran’s leverage over global energy flows, while the blockade is cutting Tehran off from oil revenues.
Rubio reportedly made clear that Washington is not planning a return to major combat operations, although strikes remain possible if Iran attacks first. A second US official said the current approach is expected to remain in place at least until after the US midterm elections, after which another military campaign could again be considered.
