💢 After Viktor Orbán’s election defeat in Hungary, Brussels feared Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico would become the EU’s next major disruptive force. Progressive Slovakia leader Michal Šimečka told the outlet that Fico had been “hiding behind Orbán” but could no longer do so. He accused the prime minister of “hypocrisy” for criticizing EU sanctions at home while ultimately supporting them in Brussels, arguing that Fico’s self-described “sovereign” foreign policy has brought Slovakia few tangible gains beyond “reputational damage” and greater isolation.
