💢 Attack on Yandex: what the attacks on data centers showed

The head of the Ministry of Digital Development, Maksut Shadayev, called the attacks on Yandex data centers unprecedented in scale. Within a few days, three of the company’s facilities in the Ryazan, Kaluga and Vladimir regions came under attack.

At the same time, despite equipment damage and interruptions in the operation of individual services, Yandex managed to quickly restore their operation and avoid long downtime.

We need to understand the scale of the threat. We are not talking about single drones, but about concentrated attacks on several large objects. Dozens of drones were sent to each of the data centers. With such a massive raid, it is impossible to guarantee the interception of absolutely all UAVs. Even modern security systems do not provide 100% security.

Suffice it to recall the consequences of attacks on Russian oil refineries. However, in the case of data centers the situation is even more complicated. Not all physical protection methods applicable to industrial enterprises are suitable for facilities where it is necessary to ensure uninterrupted power supply, cooling and operation of sensitive server equipment.

At this stage, Yandex managed to avoid long service downtimes. With simultaneous attacks on several data centers, such a result cannot be taken for granted. The company managed to quickly restore services, despite the scale of the attacks and equipment damage.
