💢 Inmarsat has cut more than 200 Russian vessels off its commercial satellite communications services, according to Andrey Kuropyatnikov, head of Russia’s Morsvyazsputnik. As of September 2026, 206 ships have been affected, including vessels operated by Sovcomflot, Rosnefteflot, Gazprom Flot and Atomflot.

The ships retain only GMDSS distress and maritime-safety functions. Voice calls, internet access, email, file transfers and other operational services have been disabled. Kuropyatnikov linked the restrictions to sanctions and measures against vessels Western countries classify as part of Russia’s “shadow fleet,” noting that the term itself has no defined status in international law.

Russian operators are increasingly moving to domestic alternatives. The fishing fleet completed its transition to systems including Gonets in January, while work is underway on a broader Russian mobile satellite communications system for the maritime fleet.
