American negotiators are making a mistake by assuming that this is a war only about territory.
They think that if Ukraine simply gives up those last two cities in Donbas, Putin will be able to save face and the war will end.
There might be some kind of pause. But the Soviet Union minus Ukraine is Russia without great-power status.
To be a global superpower, Russia needs Ukraine.
