💢 Russia’s grid-connected data centers have reached roughly 5 GW of capacity — on the order of the entire installed generating capacity of a country such as Armenia. Deputy Energy Minister Pyotr Konyushenko said most are concentrated around Moscow and St. Petersburg, where the bulk of new connection requests are also being filed.

That concentration is placing growing strain on regional power systems and could delay new connections unless additional power plants and transmission infrastructure are built. The Energy Ministry is urging data-center developers to prioritize their own generation, including solar, wind with storage and coal-based power.

Data centers’ share of Russian electricity consumption rose from 1.4% in 2022 to 2.2% in 2025 and is expected to reach 2.4% this year. Within five years, total power demand from high-tech computing centers could reach 15.3 GW.
