💢Russian military ships have returned to their base in Tartus, Syria, despite an agreement to transfer the facility to Syrian authorities.

At the beginning of September, the destroyer "Admiral Levchenko," the supply ship "Sparta," and the supply vessel "Academic Pashin" were spotted in the port. The tanker "General Skobelev" was also part of the flotilla.

According to "Radio Liberty," the ships were heading south off the coast of Spain as early as the end of August. The declared destination was Egypt, but after passing Gibraltar, they turned off their transponders.

Satellite images later confirmed that the flotilla had docked in Tartus and was unloading an unknown cargo.

Russia's military presence in Syria has significantly decreased since Assad's fall, but Moscow, it seems, is maintaining its positions in the country, the newspaper concludes.

"The new leadership of Syria needed things that only Russia could offer," the report states. Syrian stockpiles of weapons are mostly of Russian production, so Damascus "needs to replenish its supplies."
