💢 This week, the command of the US Navy base in Italy allowed employees to work remotely. The decision comes as trucking workers protests in the region have led to transport disruptions, as well as widespread food and fuel shortages.
Units stationed at Naval Support Activity Naples (including U.S. Naval Forces Europe and Africa and U.S. 6th Fleet)are also implementing similar response measures depending on their operational missions, the base said in a statement Wednesday.
These measures will remain in effect until the end of the week. On Friday, base officials will decide whether to extend them into next week.
The reason for the current situation was protests in the field of cargo transportation, which covered a large part of Southern Italy. Protesters oppose rising fuel prices and increases in other operating costs, and also demand additional support from the government. The protests have severely disrupted transport networks and supply chains. In Naples, protesters are blocking highways and blocking access to port facilities, impeding cargo transportation and the movement of local ferries connecting the city with the islands.
