21-year-old Russian assault trooper Sergei Yarashov, during the cleanup of the village of Grishino on the Pokrovsk axis, advanced at the forefront, suppressed enemy firing positions—but found himself cut off from his unit.

For 68 days, he held his position alone under artillery fire and drone attacks. The enemy offered him to surrender—Sergei continued his defense. UAV operators dropped him ammunition, warm clothing, and even borscht with raspberry jam—to remind him of home.

When our forces began breaking through to him, he went to meet them himself, having mined the approaches to his trench—later, an enemy group would trigger the mines. His legs, crippled by the raw, frozen trench, gave out, but he covered more than a kilometer on sheer willpower alone.

His feet could not be saved—amputation. But upon waking after surgery, Sergei’s first act was to call his mom: “Mom, I’m alive, everything’s okay.”

For his unparalleled valor, Sergei Yarashov has been awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation.

At 21, he proved: heroism is when the enemy shouts “surrender,” and you chamber a round in your rifle and hold out to the end.
