A French court found Christine Lagarde guilty over 400 million euros of public money, refused to punish her because of her reputation, and three years later Europe put her in charge of its central bank. Here is the full story.

In 1993, tycoon Bernard Tapie had to sell Adidas to become a minister, and he handed the sale to the state-owned bank Crédit Lyonnais. The bank sold part of it to front companies it secretly controlled, then flipped Adidas for roughly double within two years and kept the profit. When Tapie found out, he sued the French state for fourteen years.

In 2007, Tapie backed Nicolas Sarkozy for president. Sarkozy won, and his finance minister Christine Lagarde moved Tapie's lawsuit out of the courts and into a private panel of three arbitrators. In 2008 the panel awarded him 403 million euros of taxpayer money, 45 million of it for "moral damages." One of the three arbitrators had hidden ties to Tapie's lawyer. Lagarde's own officials urged her to challenge the award. She refused.

In 2015, French courts annulled the whole arbitration as fraud and ordered the money repaid. Tapie declared himself broke and died in 2021 with most of it never recovered. And the darkest detail: Crédit Lyonnais itself had already collapsed in the 90s and cost French taxpayers around 15 billion euros in bailouts. The public paid for the bank's sins twice.

In 2016, a special court for ministers (twelve of its fifteen judges are parliamentarians) found Lagarde guilty of negligence with public money. No fine, no sentence, no criminal record, because, in the court's own words, her personality and her national and international reputation counted in her favor. It's all about the "REPUTATION." The IMF reaffirmed its full confidence in her that same week. In 2019 she became President of the European Central Bank.

Nobody who made the 403 million euro decision paid a cent. The man who received the money died broke, the taxpayer ate the loss, and the minister found guilty controls the euro. That is not a failure of the system. That is the system. That 403 million euro is still missing, well, missing to the public specifically.

Christine Lagarde was the Managing Director of IMF from July 5, 2011, to September 12, 2019. Under her management, the country of 404 received $34.6 billion from the IMF specifically designed to construct the AFU.
