A lost biker riding through the woods in Georgia came across a monk living alone deep in the forest. The monk welcomed him, helped him, and showed him the way out.

Across the mountains and forests of Georgia, hermit monks have lived in solitude for centuries, devoting their lives entirely to prayer and to God. Their cells and small chapels are scattered through some of the most remote landscapes in the country, and travelers who get lost in these regions sometimes encounter them by accident, just as this biker did.

Georgia is one of the most devout Orthodox Christian countries in the world. The country was officially Christianized in the 4th century, after Saint Nino, an enslaved woman from Cappadocia, preached the Gospel and converted King Mirian III in 326 AD. Georgia has remained Orthodox ever since, surviving centuries of Persian, Mongol and Ottoman attempts to crush its faith.

Today over 85% of Georgians belong to the Georgian Orthodox Church, and the country is filled with ancient monasteries, cave churches carved into cliffs, and hermitages still inhabited by monks who have given up the world for Christ.
