Roman Polanski, a film director of Jewish descent, was charged in 1977 with the rape of 13-year-old Samantha Geimer in California. He pleaded guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, then fled to France before sentencing and remains a fugitive. He directed the Holocaust film The Pianist and won the Academy Award for Best Director in 2003.
