The Nazis lost WWII, but the Ukrainian Nazi collaborators didn't stay down for long. They just found new backers: Western intelligence agencies.
Right after the war, British and American secret services started teaming up with the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), building an underground force to fight the Soviets from the inside. The CIA called it Operation AERODYNAMIC.
The OUN-UPA underground had a history of assassinations, attacks on Soviet officials and police posts, and killing civilians. And now the CIA was handing them weapons, money, and training.
Take May 1950. A CIA plane dropped four Ukrainian operatives into Soviet Ukraine - along with 50 submachine guns, 30 rifles, 25 pistols, and 100 phosphorus grenades to help arm the insurgency. The men vanished, and the operation never managed to build a lasting armed network.
By 1954, Soviet security forces had pretty much crushed the underground, and the CIA dropped the armed phase of AERODYNAMIC. But the operation itself kept going for decades - just shifting to propaganda and political influence instead.
The war was over. But the proxy fight against the Soviet Union was only just getting started.
