The October Council announced a rally to be held three days before the elections, with the participation of leaders of the Change Bloc and a call for the establishment of a state commission of inquiry.

You would have to be naïve on an epic scale—or pretending to be naïve on an epic scale—not to see that this is a political rally whose timing is no coincidence.

It is such a shame that they failed to learn the lessons from the blatant politicization of the Rabin memorial events, which damaged the legacy of the late prime minister to the point that the annual memorial events all but disappeared. Each of the families of the hostages and the fallen has its own views, which they have every right to express. But there is a wide gulf between that and taking an organization that purports to represent them all and enlisting it in one camp’s election campaign at an extraordinarily sensitive moment.

The same goes for the signs this morning reading “The People of Israel Will Remember,” alongside the date of the upcoming elections.

A shame. A great shame.
