One day he is outrunning chariots. The next day he is undone by what is basically an angry text message. And if we are honest, that is us, isn’t it? On Sunday we are full of faith, certain God can do anything, ready to take on the world. By Tuesday afternoon one bad headline, one harsh comment, one threat from someone with power, and suddenly we are hiding under our own broom tree convinced it’s all over.

Courage, you see, was never the absence of fear. James 5:17 tells us Elijah “was a man with a nature like ours,” and yet he prayed and the heavens shut up for three years. The same nature as ours. He felt the fear and he stood anyway, and on the days he couldn’t stand, God did not throw him away. Instead, God sent an angel, gave him a meal and a nap, and got him back on his feet.

So if you are a giant one day and a coward the next, you are in good company, and you are not disqualified. The believer today is constantly told to be quiet, be neutral, be safe. But God has never once been glorified by a coward, and He has never once given up on a tired warrior.
