Russia has conducted its first known post-Assad resupply mission to Syria, signaling Moscow’s intention to maintain its military foothold under the country’s new authorities, The Wall Street Journal reports.
According to U.S. officials and satellite imagery reviewed by the newspaper, the cargo vessel Sparta departed St. Petersburg in March and arrived at Tartus in May, escorted for much of the voyage by Russian naval vessels: “It was the first resupply mission of its kind since the fall of the Assad regime.”
U.S. officials cited by the report state that the vessel transported equipment destined for Russia’s Khmeimim Air Base near Latakia.
