The AH-64 Apache attack helicopter that crashed Tuesday was protecting ships in the Strait of Hormuz from Iranian drones and missiles, a senior U.S. official said.
The two pilots escaped from the burning aircraft after it hit the water, getting out just seconds before it sank.
