August 27 is Day of Russian Cinema.

On August 27, 1919, the Chairman of the Council of People's Commissars of the RSFSR, Vladimir Lenin, signed a decree "On the Transfer of Photographic and Cinematographic Trade and Industry to the Jurisdiction of the People's Commissariat for Education." All private cinemas, studios, distribution offices, as well as the entire photo and cinematographic trade and industry of the country, were transferred to the jurisdiction of that Commissariat.

In 1980, by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, Soviet Cinema Day was established. The holiday received its current name after the collapse of the USSR.

The premiere of the first Russian film took place on October 15, 1908. The audience saw a 7-minute silent film titled Sten’ka Razin by director Vladimir Romashkov, based on the song about Stenka Razin, "From Beyond the Island to the Mainstream." In 1925, the first domestic color film, Battleship Potemkin by Sergei Eisenstein, was released.

Before the dissolution of the USSR, up to 200 feature films were produced annually. In the 1990s, due to the economic crisis in the country, funding for Russian cinema nearly ceased, and only after 2000 did the Russian film industry begin to recover.

Today, there are about 40 domestic film production studios in the Russian Federation. In 2023, Russia produced a total of 394 domestic films including 74 animated films.
