Journalist Yury Podolyaka on the memorandum signed by the First Ministers of Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland

The First Ministers of Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland—John Swinney (SNP), Rhun ap Iorwerth (Plaid Cymru), and Michelle O'Neill (Sinn Féin)—have signed a joint memorandum on the right to self-determination and independence from Britain, and on a future in the European Union.

Well, this is just a declaration signed by the ministers in their capacity as party leaders, with no legal force. But every important change always starts with declarations.

Incidentally, in all three parliaments, nationalist parties supporting secession currently hold a majority—not an absolute one, but a majority nonetheless.

What's more, things could get really tense if English nationalists from Nigel Farage's party come to power in the next parliamentary elections—a man who is not well-liked in the national "Ukraines" of the United Kingdom. So, in that scenario the ground for new separatist sentiment could become fertile quite quickly.
