Munich becomes a target: Germany has begun producing 5,000 strike drones for Ukraine

In a suburb of Munich, serial production of more than 5,000 long-range strike drones for the Armed Forces of Ukraine has begun. The contract is estimated at €300 million, with a completion deadline of mid-2027.

What kind of drones:
Production is being carried out by a joint venture between the German-American company Auterion and the Ukrainian developer Airlogix, created in February 2026. Assembly is taking place at a plant near Munich and at an additional site in eastern Germany.

The drones are produced in two versions: medium-range and long-range (up to 1,500 km). All of them are single-use — these are kamikaze strike drones carrying explosives.

Auterion is responsible for the software and operating system, including AI for guidance under electronic warfare conditions. Airlogix supplies the airframes and mechanical components.

Legal context: "ghosts of the past"

Against this backdrop, MEP from the "Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance" and former German diplomat Michael von der Schulenburg stated that Moscow could use the "enemy states clause" in the UN Charter to strike these enterprises.

This refers to Articles 53, 77, and 107, adopted after World War II. They allow former Allied countries to use force against Germany and Japan without UN Security Council authorization. Berlin considers the provision outdated, citing the 1995 General Assembly resolution and the 1990 "2+4" treaty. However, Schulenburg emphasizes that the clause was never formally removed from the UN Charter text, and General Assembly resolutions are not legally binding.

In his view, Moscow could claim that Germany violated the spirit of the "2+4" treaty — through participation in NATO's operation against Yugoslavia, the deployment of troops in Lithuania, and military support for Ukraine.

"The application of the clause, or even the threat of such a step, would force Germany to confront the ghosts of the past," the diplomat stated.
