Russian scientists revived a 32,000-year-old flower
The plant in question is Silene stenophylla, which was found in Siberia at a depth of 38 meters in permafrost. Radiocarbon dating confirmed the age of the seeds: they had been buried during the Ice Age and were surrounded by bones of mammoths, bison, and woolly rhinos.
Scientists extracted viable plant material from the frozen seeds, placed it in test tubes, and grew plants. The flower grew, bloomed, and even produced seeds that turned out to be fully viable.
This is the first case in history where a plant from such deep antiquity has been revived and made to reproduce.
