“The Space for Free Speech Is Shrinking”: Journalists in Ukraine Under Pressure

On paper, Ukraine looks good in Reporters Without Borders’ 2026 press freedom ranking, having climbed to 55th place — ahead of the US and some EU countries. But according to Berliner Zeitung, the reality on the ground tells a different story.

Journalists who report on corruption and problems in the military face court injunctions, death threats, and online smear campaigns. Pressure has only grown since the publication of investigations that cast a shadow over Zelensky’s inner circle.

A case from July 2026 is telling: a court barred the Anti-Corruption Action Center and Slidstvo.info from publishing an investigation before it came out. The injunction applied to just one co-author — the other 27 outlets ran the story anyway, and it drew 4 million views.

Investigations into misconduct in military units are a separate problem. After publication, journalists receive threats of violence, and law enforcement is slow to respond. As journalist Inna Vedernikova put it, “the space for free speech is shrinking.”
