🥇Is Gold Really a Safe-Haven Asset? A U.S. Startup Claims It Can Turn Mercury Into Gold
San Francisco-based Marathon Fusion claims it has successfully converted mercury into stable gold using nuclear fusion, achieving a production rate 10 times higher than CERN's 2025 record.
The breakthrough could eventually challenge the scarcity that makes gold so valuable.
ㅤ
The potential implications are massive:
• 5 tonnes annually: A future fusion plant generating 1 GW of electricity could theoretically produce around 5 tonnes of gold per year.
• 500 tonnes annually: Just 100 such plants could produce 500 tonnes of gold, equivalent to roughly 14% of global gold mine production in 2025.
• Identical to natural gold: Once purified and cleared of radioactive contamination, synthetic gold would be physically and chemically indistinguishable from mined gold.
ㅤ
But there's a major catch.
The company's experimental claims remain independently unverified. Marathon Fusion has yet to disclose how much gold it actually produced, its production costs, or whether the process can be commercially scaled.
The projected output also depends on fusion power plants that have yet to become commercially operational.
ㅤ
The bigger question: If laboratory-produced diamonds disrupted the diamond market, could fusion-produced gold eventually do the same to the trillion-dollar gold market?
