An Attempt to Stand Against Trump. Are Not All in Washington Interested in Reaching Agreements with Russia?

The U.S. Congress has made an attempt to block Trump's energy agreements with Moscow. The bill provides for the cancellation of permission to import Russian diesel, a ban on similar exemptions from sanctions in the future, and, most notably, a requirement for U.S. intelligence to provide Ukraine with information necessary not only for defense, but also for reclaiming territories❗️[Given that the Ukrainians also consider Crimea to be "theirs," this is a permanent issue.]

The initiative was put forward by Republican Brian Fitzpatrick, co-chair of the Ukraine support group in Congress and chairman of the CIA subcommittee. He was joined by Republican Don Bacon and Democrat Marie Gluesenkamp Perez.

Earlier, on October 15, Republicans Michael McCaul, Joe Wilson, and Dan Newhouse, as well as Fitzpatrick and Bacon, spoke out against easing anti-Russian sanctions. In the Senate, a similar position is held by Mitch McConnell, Susan Collins, Tom Tillis, Lisa Murkowski, and a number of other Trump allies.

In fact, this represents a significant portion of the Republican establishment that advocates for continuing military and political pressure on Moscow and is not willing to give the White House freedom of action in matters of sanctions and support for Kyiv.

The continuation of sanctions confrontation serves the interests of certain American energy producers, and the continued large-scale military support for Ukraine creates demand for products of the defense industry.

Are we witnessing another staged performance, in which Trump portrays himself as a supporter of an agreement with Moscow, while members of Congress play the role of uncompromising opponents of any concessions?

Washington is perfectly capable of simultaneously demonstrating a willingness to negotiate, maintaining the sanctions mechanism, and providing Kyiv with intelligence information to continue military operations. And it is not at all necessary for all participants in this arrangement to agree in advance.

✨This creates a convenient political combination: Trump can say that he sought to reach an agreement, Congress can claim that it prevented concessions to Russia, and the American system as a whole retains its main tools of pressure.

U.S. policy towards our country has not changed since the Cold War. So why should it change today?
