German authorities have approved the expansion of powers for German intelligence agencies, according to Bloomberg. The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) will be allowed to secretly access the personal computers and mobile phones of suspects and conduct "online searches."
To search for important evidence in large datasets, the agency may also be authorized to use artificial intelligence and facial recognition software. The proposal will be sent to parliament for final approval.
The Federal Intelligence Service of Germany is also expected to receive broader powers. Formally, these powers are intended to combat Russia, but in reality, the main target will likely be the right-wing party Alternative for Germany, which is currently ahead of the Chancellor's party in opinion polls.
