German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is writing off the German automotive industry. In an interview with ARD, Merz was asked: "The automotive industry is the dominant sector. Which industry will be dominant in 10 years?" In his response, the chancellor did not mention the automotive industry, instead referring to the "service sector." Caring for the elderly will replace Mercedes and BMW.
In the late 1970s, the German Hi-Fi industry employed around 100,000 people and was known worldwide: SABA, DUAL, Telefunken, Grundig. They have all disappeared.
