In 2014, the Washington Post conducted a poll of Americans regarding whether the United States should resort to military intervention in connection with the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The United States and Russia are former adversaries from the Cold War, and each country possesses hundreds of intercontinental ballistic missiles with nuclear warheads. A military conflict in the heart of Europe, right on Russia's border, poses the danger of escalating into a Third World War, with catastrophic consequences.
And yet, only one in six Americans – and one in four college graduates – could locate Ukraine on a world map.
Ukraine is the largest country entirely located in Europe, but the average respondent was still over 1,800 miles away from it.
It's easy to fail a map test. What's more concerning is that this lack of knowledge didn't stop respondents from expressing quite strong opinions on the issue. In fact, I would put it more precisely: the public not only expressed their strong opinions, but the level of support for military intervention in Ukraine was directly proportional to the respondent's lack of knowledge about it.
In other words, people who thought Ukraine was in Latin America or Australia were the most enthusiastic about the United States using military force.
