The cessation of gas supplies from Russia has cost Germany more than €50 billion, and to mitigate the consequences, the German government has spent approximately €600 per citizen. This was reported by the newspaper Bild.
Merz linked the energy crisis in Germany to the lack of gas from Russia.
The publication recalled that in 2022, the government of Olaf Scholz implemented an unprecedented package of measures to support companies and private households, and to stabilize the energy supply situation. These measures cost €50.4 billion. Converted per capita, this amounts to approximately €600 – and this is only the direct assistance from the state.
As Bild noted, experts believe that the consequences of abandoning Russian energy sources are actually even greater. The amount mentioned by the Ministry of Finance does not include, for example, the costs of building new terminals for receiving liquefied natural gas, or the burden associated with rising energy prices.
