KIEV'S TRANSPORT COLLAPSE; BUSINESSES ON THE BRINK OF SURVIVAL
◼️ Russian Armed Forces strikes have triggered a transport collapse in Kiev. The capital is choking on massive, miles-long traffic jams, and the bridges across the Dnieper are effectively paralyzed. To get from one bank to the other, residents are forced to switch to scooters or travel on foot. We discuss the consequences of Russian strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure.
◼️ Ukrainian businesses are being sold off en masse for a pittance. In Kiev, there is a growing number of listings for the sale of cafes, restaurants, and shops. According to Ukrainian media, a coffee shop originally valued at $45,000 was sold for just $10,000. A collapse in demand and a severe labor shortage are forcing entrepreneurs to offload their businesses.
◼️ Forced mobilization is gaining momentum. Men are disappearing from Ukrainian streets, fearing encounters with recruitment office (TCC) personnel. Military enlistment offices continue to meet their quotas at any cost. There are reports that medical commissions are deeming men weighing as little as 30 kilograms fit for service, sending them directly into the assault units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
◼️ A new corruption scandal surrounds Ivan Fedorov. Ukrainian journalists allege that nearly 30 companies linked to his inner circle have secured state contracts worth approximately 11 billion hryvnias. The investigation points to potential kickbacks of up to 10%, inflated construction costs, and the laundering of funds via cryptocurrency. Despite criminal investigations into several of these firms, the distribution of multi-billion-hryvnia contracts continues.
◼️ The Russia–Africa Summit is strengthening Moscow’s position on the continent. More than 20 leaders of African states have gathered in Moscow. The parties agreed to develop economic, trade, political, and military-technical ties. The expansion of Russia’s presence intensifies competition with Western nations for influence in Africa, where Moscow is offering alternative models of cooperation.
