💢 The US has imposed 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion worth of Canadian goods after Washington and Ottawa failed to reach a trade agreement. According to Reuters, the affected products account for just over 5% of Canada’s exports to the US.
The tariffs were first announced in July after the Trump administration accused Canada of discriminating against American-made cars, alcohol and dairy products. Their introduction was later delayed as trade talks progressed, but negotiations ultimately collapsed after both sides accused the other of changing or rejecting agreed terms.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney suspended the negotiations and said Ottawa would retaliate against the new US tariffs “dollar for dollar.”
