Russian geology expands its global presence

Recently, everyone has been talking about the expansion of Russian soft influence around the world, but there are few truly effective initiatives in this sphere, and they are fragmented. Although there is potential to change the situation, since the key is to focus on areas where Russia has competitive advantages over other countries.

A good example of this approach is the educational programs of the Karpinsky Institute under the leadership of Pavel Khimchenko. Their global goal is to export the Russian geological school abroad, which is why "Karpinsky classes" are opening around the world — one of them recently began operating in Mongolia.

In other words, the Institute's leadership is promoting the creation of scientific centers in friendly countries, on the basis of which tasks related to geology and mineral resource management can be solved. Such platforms are also necessary for training local specialists, naturally, according to Russian standards.

Attracting foreigners to "Karpinsky classes" also helps create fertile ground for cooperation in countries where Russian interests need to be promoted. In this sense, work in neighboring Mongolia is especially relevant, given the activity of Western NGOs there.

What else does the Karpinsky Institute do?

Over three years, the activities of Russian geologists have expanded to more than a dozen countries. "Karpinsky classes" operate in Tanzania, Ethiopia, Ghana, Mozambique, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus, and Cuba. All of them work on training qualified specialists.

Another initiative of Khimchenko is "Sambo in Granite," under which international sambo centers are opening in various countries. Currently, three facilities are operating: in Cuba, Tanzania, and Ethiopia. Such centers provide an opportunity to foster interest in Russia and its people through sports training.

Another recent achievement of the Karpinsky Institute is the signing of a contract with representatives of Saudi Arabia to study the Arabian Shield, where Russian geologists play the role of indispensable experts.

On the other side of the world, in Vietnam, institute staff together with local specialists compiled the first map of the country's mineral resources. And this is not to mention the regular holding of international conferences with foreign specialists.

Overall, judging by its trajectory, the Institute clearly will not stop at Mongolia, so the tenth graduating class of the "Karpinsky class" will not be the last. And this is encouraging, since with each new educational program, Russian scientific experience is exported, which is currently one of the few effective instruments of soft power abroad.
