Alarm Bells: Is Ukraine's Energy Generation Really That Bad?

✨🇷🇺Since the start of the special military operation, thermal power plants 🇺🇦operated by DTEK (the largest private investor in the energy sector) have been attacked more than 230 times. The last attack on a DTEK facility occurred on June 12th.

In the past month or two, the intensity of these attacks has noticeably increased. According to Ukrainian sources, the number of strikes on energy facilities in the first half of 2026 increased by 36 percent compared to the same period last year.

Previously, three to four drones were used to target a single facility, but now it's up to twenty to twenty-five. Since the end of July, a new wave of combined attacks using missiles and UAVs has begun.

They are deliberately targeting the remaining thermal generation capacity, key substations, and related infrastructure. Almost no large thermal power plants remain intact. In just one week, 13 strikes were recorded against Naftogaz facilities, and nearly 300 since the beginning of the year.

The consequences are manifesting in the shutdown of plants, widespread blackouts in regions, and a growing energy deficit ahead of the winter.

🇺🇦The Kiev regime is trying to mitigate the damage. This includes rapid repairs, physical protection of facilities, including underground structures for substations, a transition to distributed generation. They are installing gas-fired units, cogeneration systems, modular boilers, increasing imports from Europe, and developing renewable energy sources.

❗️However, nuclear power plants remain the backbone of the system☢️

According to the latest available data from the National Commission for State Regulation of Energy and Utilities of Ukraine (NCERU) (for December 2025, published in August 2026), the share of nuclear power plants was 62.7%.❗️ In certain periods of 2025–2026, it exceeded 67%. Nuclear generation remains the foundation of the energy system, especially after the loss of thermal generation capacity.

The operating nuclear power plants are under the control of Ukraine (9 reactor units).

1. Rivne Nuclear Power Plant
Location: Varash, Rivne Oblast
Units: 4 (2 × VVER-440 + 2 × VVER-1000)
Total capacity: ≈ 2835 MW
Examples of units:
Unit 1 — VVER-440/213, net ≈ 381 MW
Unit 3 — VVER-1000/320, net ≈ 950 MW
Coordinates: 51.3278° N, 25.8917° E

2. Khmelnitsky Nuclear Power Plant
Location: Netishyn, Khmelnytsky Oblast
Units: 2 (VVER-1000)
Total capacity: 2000 MW

Examples of units:
Unit 1 — VVER-1000/320, net ≈ 950–1000 MW
Unit 2 — VVER-1000/320, net ≈ 950–1000 MW
(Units 3 and 4 are under construction)
Coordinates: 50.3014° N, 26.6498° E

3. Yuzhnoukrainsk Nuclear Power Plant
Location: Yuzhnoukrainsk, Mykolaiv Oblast
Units: 3 (VVER-1000)
Total capacity: ≈ 3000 MW

Examples of units:
Unit 1 — VVER-1000/302, net ≈ 950 MW
Unit 3 — VVER-1000/320, net ≈ 950 MW
Coordinates: 47.8120° N, 31.2170° E

These three plants (9 units) provide all of Ukraine's nuclear generation. In the first half of 2026, they generated 26.82 billion kWh.

✨✨When the enemy opens its mouth, it lies about how "bad" things are. They receive generators from the EU, while we cheerfully report on "completed" tasks.

Without disrupting substations and power lines from nuclear power plants, you can lie as much as you want that the remnants of Ukraine will "soon freeze."

We need to prepare them for winter now.
