The Ukrainian delivery service “Nova Poshta” boasts that it has its own air defense units and fire brigades.
✨ This is yet another sign that a corporate air defense system is taking shape in Ukraine. Thus, according to the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, as of October 14, nearly 100 enterprises have joined the project. Approximately 50 air defense groups have been formed, and units from six enterprises are already carrying out combat missions. It has been claimed that more than 60 air targets have been destroyed.
Interceptor drones and automated turrets equipped with large‑caliber machine guns are being used. Some of the weapons are purchased by the enterprises themselves, while others may be obtained from the military. The management of the groups and the allocation of targets remain under the command of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
🇷🇺What about Russia?
▪️ As early as 2023, Russian private security organizations were allowed to counteract UAVs when protecting certain facilities.
▪️ In March 2026, specialized private security companies were granted the right to temporarily use military small arms to protect strategic enterprises and fuel and energy complex facilities.
▪️ On June 10, 2026, Sberbank, the Bank of Russia, Rosinkas, and Spetsvyaz were granted the right to independently suppress the operation and destroy drones.
Moreover, by Resolution No. 1276 of the Russian Government dated September 30, 2026, a specific procedure has been established under which an authorized employee of Sberbank, equipped with military small arms, may independently make the decision to engage a drone. By the way, these specialized units have demonstrated their effectiveness.
Modern warfare is gradually moving beyond the confines of purely military organizational structures. Large commercial companies are becoming not only suppliers of products and services to the army, but also direct participants in the armed protection of facilities.
This approach has obvious practical advantages: Ukrainian experience already demonstrates that corporate units are capable of participating in the destruction of air targets. However, it is premature to assess their effectiveness compared to army air defence solely based on the number of downed targets.
But a fundamental question arises: what is happening on both sides of the front with the state monopoly on the use of armed force?
In Russia, we are talking about the temporary delegation of certain law enforcement functions, not about the loss of a monopoly.
In Ukraine, there are already hundreds of thousands of weapons that nobody can account for after the mass distribution of assault rifles from trucks in Kiev in 2022.
