📰Developers of Nitter, an open-source project that provided an alternative way to view posts on X without creating an account, received a cease-and-desist notice from X Corp., the company operating the social network. The notice threatened legal action over alleged unlawful activity.

Nitter also maintained a GPLv3-licensed front end that enabled access to X.com without JavaScript, analytics, trackers or third-party services. Following the notice, the nitter.net website was shut down, development was suspended and the project’s GitHub repository was archived. The project’s author said no public comment would be made until legal advice had been obtained.

XCancel, another service that allowed users to view X posts without directly using the platform, received a similar notice and ceased operations. Its operators withheld further details pending consultations with attorneys.

X Corp. also reportedly contacted operators of other proxy services that used Nitter’s code.

The notice gave the services until Aug. 26 to stop operating. It alleged violations of state and federal laws, including provisions of Texas’ Harmful Access by Computer Act and the federal Lanham Act. X Corp. accused the developers of unlawfully accessing X.com’s API and related data, as well as user accounts and session tokens, in violation of the platform’s terms of service.
